The SIFT Program

The Student Industry Field Trip is the CSPG flagship student program, introducing 3rd year undergraduate geoscience students to the petroleum industry. It was formed in 1978 by Bill Aryton, and began as a 4-day course... it has now grown to a 2-week program encompassing downstream and upstream aspects of the industry. One student representative is selected from each Canadian university geoscience program (or geological engineering), and is brought to Calgary in early May to attend the program.

The program includes:

  • summer employment program (for interested parties)

  • lecture series - petroleum industry, well logging & interpretation, carbonate/clastic reservoirs, geophysics, operations

  • core workshops

  • field trips - 4-day Rocky Mountain geological field trip, Dinosaur Provincial Park field trip, and a rig tour

  • petroleum exploration game
